Don’t Say What You Think We Want to Hear

When you are involved in a job search, landing an interview is exciting. You may be thrilled about the prospect of finally being considered for a job and eager to get hired – especially if the company is one you are excited about.

Because you want to make the best impression, you may be tempted to just tell the interviewer exactly what you think he wants to hear when you’re asked questions. Unfortunately, this is the wrong approach to take for several reasons. Honesty is the best policy in your job search because:

  • You may get caught if you’re not honest: If you tell the interviewer you have experience or credentials you don’t, there’s a good chance you will be caught eventually. This can lead to you not getting the job, getting fired if you were already hired and burning your bridges. It’s far better not to get a job if you have to lie to get it.
  • You won’t come off as genuine: If you tell the hiring manager what you think they want to hear, you may come across as phony and you’ll lose out on the chance to show off your true personality and make a positive impression. You’re far more likely to impress the hiring manager if you’re open, honest and forthcoming rather than coming across as sycophantic.
  • You could end up in a job you don’t like: An interview is a chance for you to evaluate the company, just as it is a chance for the company to evaluate you. If you lie about your skills or about the type of environment that you work best in, you’re likely to find yourself very unhappy if you are hired. While it may be frustrating, it’s better to wait for a job you are a good fit for rather than be dishonest to try to get a job you’ll probably end up hating anyway.
