Answering Difficult Interview Questions
During your job search, it’s inevitable that you will be asked to answer tough interview questions at some point in the process. Your answers to these questions can make all the difference when it comes to advancing in the hiring process.
While many interview questions are intentionally difficult so employers can gauge how you think on your feet, don’t get flustered. There are some things you can do to come up with great answers to even the hardest interview questions. To wow the hiring manager with great answers:
- Don’t be afraid to ask for a moment to think the answer through. An employer would rather see you take a second to provide a thoughtful answer than have you give an answer that is a bad one. You can also ask the employer to repeat the question if you aren’t sure exactly what they are looking for.
- Provide thorough answers – but avoid rambling. When you are asked a question, make sure you provide an answer to the query that was posed. Don’t go off on a tangent or give a rambling answer that is hard for the interviewer to follow. Instead, think about what is being asked and provide an answer that is to the point and gives the hiring manager the information they are looking for.
- Practice in advance for the toughest interview questions. There are some common questions like tell me about yourself, or what is your greatest weakness that many people find difficult to answer. If you practice in advance, you’ll be ready and the question won’t seem so tough.
