Make Punctuality Your Strength
There are many different job skills employers look for in workers. While employers want to ensure that the people they hire can do the day-to-day tasks required of them, employers also place a very high value on whether or not a particular worker is reliable. Reliability means many different things, but punctuality is one of the most important components of being reliable.
When you are working for an employer either on a temporary basis or full time and you want to impress your employer with your job skills, being punctual is one of the simplest things you can do to make a favorable impression. To make punctuality your strength:
- Always be on time. Know what time you are expected to be at work and ensure that you arrive a few minutes before you are scheduled to start. Plan to leave early enough so traffic or other unexpected delays will not make you late.
- Never miss work unexpectedly. Part of being punctual is showing up when you are expected. While emergencies can happen occasionally, make it a point to never miss work unless you truly cannot help it. If you do have an emergency, call as soon as possible to let your employer know if you’ll be late or if you can’t come in at all.
- Use the proper channels to request time off. Everyone needs time off. The good news is if you follow the proper procedures for asking for time off, it won’t count against you if you need to miss a few hours or a few days of work.
It pays to make punctuality your strength because employers are always looking for someone they can count on to show up on time. Being punctual can help you get promoted in your current position, or can help you get hired for a full-time position if you are currently doing temp work. Employers are also likely to mention punctuality when they act as a reference, so being on time can help you get more opportunities in the future.
