Is an Employee Underperforming?
When you manage staff members, you want to ensure every employee works to their full potential. But, what happens if you have an underperforming employee?
The good news is there are often simple steps you can take to get the staff member back on track, bring productivity back up and ensure you are getting the full value from your human resources.
To help your underperforming employee do better:
- Provide concrete, constructive feedback on a regular basis: If an employee is underperforming, it could be because the staff member needs more guidance. Annual reviews, or even quarterly reviews, could leave staff members floundering for months if they don’t know how to thrive at your organization. By providing ongoing feedback in a less formalized setting, you can give an underperforming staff member the tools necessary to do better — without creating the potential for unpleasant confrontation or throwing so much feedback at the staff member they can’t possibly remember it all.
- Set measurable goals with objective metrics for success: Setting goals can give an underperforming employee something specific to work towards, which is bound to bolster performance. It’s important there is an objective scale so the employee can track their progress and determine if they are on the right track to become successful.
- Provide the training and tools your staff member needs: Often, people underperform at work because they are frustrated with the processes they’re using or because they lack the tools or knowledge necessary to succeed. Work closely with the underperforming worker to find out what might be holding them back, and then provide the tools or guidance they need to improve productivity and become successful.
